Run for Kaya and 5th Herzogenaurach Earth Day

The Run for Kaya and the 5th Herzogenaurach Earth Day were held jointly for the first time on April 24, 2015. A record number of 3,600 participants was achieved by combining both events.

Water was the common theme of this double event. The companies involved in the 5th Earth Day Schaeffler AG, adidas AG, PUMA SE, m&i-Fachklinik Herzogenaurach, VIPA GmbH, ProLeit AG and the city of Herzogenaurach provided information about their activities for protecting water and resources at their booths.

Adidas AG demonstrated how cotton can be dyed using a dry-dye process with a very low water consumption. The company is also a partner in Parley for the Oceans, an organization, which is collecting plastic waste from the world's oceans and recycling it into synthetic fibers, from which  adidas, in turn, manufactures new sportswear.

PUMA SE booth provided an insight into its environmental key figures, such as the company's water consumption. For example, the water consumed in the production of shoes was reduced by 27% between 2011 and 2014. The sport-article company also informed about its collaboration in the Greenpeace's Detox project, which is aimed at eliminating toxic chemicals from textile production.

VIPA GmbH informed at its booth about the topic of water treatment and the increased efficiency achieved in different treatment processes, which were implemented in national and international projects with VIPA technology.

In addition to energy usage and recycling, Schaeffler AG's information booth also informed about the company's water consumption. Since 2004, a city water saving of 25% has been achieved by using well water for cooling machines and equipment, for example. In addition, Schaeffler showed that as a supplier it is also involved in the generation of renewable energy from water by exhibiting a model of a hydroelectric power plant.

The city of Herzogenaurach informed about the implementation of its concept for the development of 3rd-class waterways within the city, for whose ecological status it is responsible. There were also display boards providing comprehensive information about the drinking water and wastewater projects of the twin city Kaya in Burkina Faso, which are supported by Kaya's European twin cities Herzogenaurach and Châtellerault. The goal of this Franco-German and Burkinabe cooperation project, which belongs to the three cities, is to improve the drinking water supply and waste water system in nine municipalities in Burkina Faso.

The donations from the company running event, which will this year probably exceed the record donations of 40,000 Euros, will go to the drinking water and wastewater project in the twin city in Burkina Faso. Since 2005, Run for Kaya has taken place every two years at Herzogenaurach High School's sports facility. The high school's organization team, a project seminar about career and university studies orientation with 18 students, called on all schools, kindergartens, companies and associations in Herzogenaurach to run for the people in Kaya. 31 students from the Berthelot High School in Kaya's twin city Châtellerault in France who were visiting Herzogenaurach also took part in the run.
